#277 What are you watching this Summer 2013?

Posted in Anime, Blue Exorcist with tags , , , on July 11, 2013 by Lee T

I bet you’re wondering where Naruto and Bleach chapter reviews lately. Well, they’re not coming. Naruto is getting very suspenseful, but also slowing down to one event per chapter. Bleach is too busy flipping through their multitude of new and old characters that I’m losing focus from the main story.

But let’s talk about anime.

I know I’m late. Animes have come out for the past couple weeks and I haven’t even seen 1 yet. Well, I watched Monogatari Series. I’m going to start now!

Things I will be watching this Summer 2013:

Gin No Saji (Silver Spoon)

To be honest, the manga has completely lost my interest. Other than being a great source of agricultural knowledge (some which I can relate to since I go to an agricultural university myself) I believe this series has become an anime through the pure hype of the author’s previous work, Fullmetal Alchemist.

This is a rare case that the anime has to be better than the original story of the manga.

Of course, this won’t stop me from continuing to read the series and watch the anime. Let’s see what happens.

GNSa 1Hachiken x Bacon is canon now.
In writing this post, I have only seen the OP and this put a smile on me. I hope the rest of the anime will do the same.

Monogatari Series: Second Season

Bakemonogatari is back and it will be my number 1 focus this series. Its unnatural scenes and lack of continuity really is something. I always love how the scenery tells the story more than the character that is standing still in a large room.

It looks as though they will be focusing on everyone else other than Araragi, hinted by the series poster and first episode. Episode 1 was named Nekomonogatari but the series is called Monogatari Series. It probably means that each episode will be named after each of the female characters respectively. They already said episode 2 is about Hachiki in the beginning of episode 1!

Ao no Exorcist (Blue Exorcist) Movie

An anime that was better than its manga. Not much else I can say. This movie is already out raw, but refuse to watch it until subs come out to make every moment count. No spoilers for me please!

Watashi ga Motenai no wa Dou Kangaete mo Omaera ga Warui!
(No Matter How I Look at It, It’s You Guys’ Fault I’m Not Popular!)

Little girl obsessed with high school dating games and expects to be extremely popular like the games. Expectations vs Reality is hilarious.

Read the description, I’m curious. I’m going to wait a few more weeks until a few episodes come out to watch them consecutively.

Kamisama no Inai Nichiyoubi (Sunday Without God)

Read the manga. Liked it.

First episode is a complete disappointment.

Lack of… character from Ai? Her head is wider than her shoulders for Pete’s sake. She is now a generic submissive anime character who you have to pity 90% of the time. First episode is too rushed. Every scene is a sunset scene even when this episode spans across multiple days.

I’ll stay until about episode 4 and see how good the anime really is.

Blood Lad

I have no idea why this became an anime. Well, kinda.

I have been reading the manga for quite a few years now and the first arc is very good. Otaku vampire who lives in the underworld is a big plus. It’s recently that all that stuff about Staz has died down and sort of disappeared and they are focusing on actual plot. I got really annoyed and bored after that since Staz just became all OP and DGAF about a lot of things. Makes him look like a sensible character, which I don’t really like at all. I never really understood why he was called ‘Blood Lad’ since only Wolf called him that and it was never explained… I’ll watch this… someday.

This feels more like a waiting list for anime I think I’ll watch rather than the things I will absolutely watch. I’m not that into anime anymore and none of these titles really get me excited other than Monogatari Series.
I guess it’s just a fill in until AKB0048 and Fairy Tail start up again.

See you… whenever. I just made a Tumblr so it might be a while before I return.

#276 Hataraku Maou-Sama Review

Posted in Anime on June 27, 2013 by Lee T

Hataraku Maou-Sama episode 13 : The Dark Lord and the Hero Work with All Their Might [watch here]

The ending was… meh. It was kind of broken up into pieces with random things to wrap up the season. Pretty poorly, if you ask me.

The first 3 minutes before the theme song was a conclusion to the previous episode’s battle.

Hataraku Maou-Sama 13 0

And Mini-James isn’t back in Ente Isla because Maou screwed up making a portal back. Don’t give me that bamboo tree garbled explanation!

And he, the manager of Sentucky, has fallen in love with the manager of McRonalds. Oh joy…

Chiho had a dream about Maou. Emi had a dream about Maou. Suzuko… does she dream? It doesn’t matter. These 3 women’s lives are revolved around Maou. Ashiya and Urushihara are pushed to the side.

And then things get all suspenseful and serious when the guys have a secret they can’t tell. It got really really suspenseful, but due to the nature of this series, there was never anything to be worried about. He just needs to pay for stuff, like always.

Urushihara gets caught in a marketing scam and… what? He’s written as 18? What a midget he is. He’s as tall as Chiho and she’s 16. Interesting, though, that in Japan, the rule for minors is having a guardian even at 18, whereas in United States, 18 is the age where you are legally an adult and cannot have guardianship bindings.

And then:

Hataraku Maou-Sama 13 1Of course, they needed a reference to the first episode.

Hataraku Maou-Sama 13 2And a reference to the first time Maou and Emi in Japan after the ending credits. New ending theme song by the way.

Overall, this anime was quite enjoyable, comically and animation wise. I know many don’t see anything special in the animation, but it was what I liked about it. The animation was complete and didn’t cut corners where most animes would have.

The series started out extremely strong. Back story, battle scenes, a fake language. It was a perfect beginning. The only problem is that most of the things that were established are completely useless to the rest of the story. Let me list them out for you.

The continent that lies on the ocean of Ignora consisting of a large central island with four islands to the south, north, east, and west, watched over by the gods, is Ente Isla.
This is the first sentence of the entire series. How much do you really need to know? None of it other than the name, Ente Isla.

Four generals of Satan’s army? Only 2 that look most human-like come to Japan. One becomes a deadbeat that sits in front of a computer all day.

Satan flies with bat-like wings? Not anymore. He just stands in the air like a Shinigami from Bleach.

Hataraku Maou-Sama 1 0from Hataraku Maou-sama! episode 1

Their first meal in Japan is Khatsudon, in which they pronounce “Khatsu-dum”. They like it, but they never really learn how to make the dish (or can’t afford kitchen utensils for it) and only this plays a significance in the last episode.

There is a lack of information from Ente Isla as well as the story is more focused on the financial troubles of the 2 main characters, Ashiya and Maou. We understand that the humans have a victory over their world again, but the demons seem to have just vanished. Emi, Ashiya, and Maou don’t seem to have any concern about what is happening in their original world.

Rewatching the first episode, I realized he made that portal to Japan himself. A good conclusion would be that he can’t make portals. Mini-James wasn’t sent correctly to Ente Isla either. He probably can never get back even if he tried.

But I didn’t watch for the deep back story and action scenes. I watched for the comedy.

This show makes living in poverty hilarious. At the same time, they talk in that funny medieval way that makes me feel like they’re hardcore LARPers. Ashiya’s over exaggerated actions make it all worth while.

The other thing was the ripoff names for products. McRonalds? Sentucky Fried Chicken?

Hataraku Maou-Sama 1 1From Hataraku Maou-Sama! episode 1

Holy Potter: Blood of a Sorcerer and a Dragon. Things don’t get better than that.

Suspense in this show is really good too. The build up and the reveal is both surprising and awkward at the same time! Oh Emilia. Forever a tsundere.

I also like how they chose not to have an official opening theme sequence until many episodes later when all the characters have been introduced. Theme sequences usually spoil which characters are good guys, who you expect to appear later, who falls in love, and so forth. I’ve never seen an anime do that except for the first 2 episodes. This was for the first like, first 5. If they did put in the official theme song in the beginning, we would have known that Lucifer would become a good guy even when he was introduced as a powerful antagonist in the first arc of the story. After that, even the story took a turn south. Nothing as exciting as Lucifer’s attack happened again.

Hataraku Maou-sama! gets a 3/5 score from me. Due to the lack of character development and actually, character degeneration. Lucifer, aka Urushihara is our first antagonist and then becomes a bum sitting in the back of the room. Useful at times, but degenerated overall. Maou Satan as well. His connection to his “I want to take over the world” personality is non-existent. The ending feels as if thrown together and not a full wrap up of the story, or even the season in this matter. After all this, we still have to remember that this is a comedy and lines are not connected for the sake of comedy. If this was a well rounded story, it might be a lot more dramatic and depressing, but it’s not. Straight up comedy and it has made me laugh out loud on multiple occasions. I suggest this series for light anime watchers who need a laugh. It’s a story about financial problems.

#272 Heaven on Earth

Posted in Anime, Uncategorized with tags , , , , on June 21, 2013 by Lee T

Hataraku Maou-sama! episode 12 : The Overlord Does His Job [watch here]

Maou is more concerned about Chiho when Emilia’s life is on the line. I don’t like it. Even if I don’t, it is important to the story since Maou’s job is the thing he cares about the most. Eh, it’s what we get for comedy.

This episode has a lot of punching people. Olba punching Ashiya, Lucifer punching Olba, and lots of punches at Mini-James.

Speaking of Mini-James, still a creep-o.

Hataraku Maou-Sama 12 0Maou on the other hand, is now Gray Fullbuster. Just underwear, socks, and shoes.

Hataraku Maou-Sama 12 1

Especially the underwear part.

Hataraku Maou-Sama 12 2

So Mini-James gets his power from the moon? Olba somehow made the moon closer to the Earth… Interesting that he can do that without the Earth’s gravitational pull going completely out of whack. We can let it pass, though. It isn’t that major of a logic breaker.

Then, there’s Lucifer.

Hataraku Maou-Sama 12 3Tricking Olba, returning Emilia’s bag, and saying this. That’s so sweet of him. He’s not so bad after all. :)

Oh yeah, the broom!

Hataraku Maou-Sama 12 4I knew it was important. I wish it played a better role in the battle, though. It didn’t get a lot of attention even after Maou went out of his way to bring it last episode…

So if he can teleport the broom into his hand, can’t he do that with his work uniform as well? That panic at the end about it is kinda lame.

Ashiya is also lame, appearing at the end of the battle like Luna at the after party.

Next episode will be the season finale, and I’m not sure how they’re supposed end it now. Mini-James was a really bad final boss and I would much prefer Olba be more of a threat. Oh well.

I wish I picked up on this anime sooner. I jumped on board about episode 8 and didn’t really feel like blogging about it even though it is so amazing. I’ve been really bad at keeping up with anime this year. Hopefully I’ll be more diligent next season? See you next episode!

Hataraku Maou-Sama! episode 11 : The Hero Keeps Her Faith [watch here]

I know I haven’t been talking about this anime at all this season, but today’s episode really just… A character made me go ‘wtf’.

I’m not really sure what his name is but we’re going to call him Mini-James. I mean, look at him!

Hataraku Maou-Sama 10From Hataraku Maou-sama! episode 10

First he’s got this aviator glasses, ponytail thing. Pretty weird, huh? Then,

Hataraku Maou-Sama 11 2

Ski mask, huh? Okay… looks good for a villain. But then,

Hataraku Maou-Sama 11 3

Wishboneª Logo

What. Is that. On. Your. Face?

Suddenly, you’re Wishbone. The similarity is remarkable.

But wait! That’s not all!

Hataraku Maou-Sama 11 4

You just had to shoot laser beams out of your eyes. Is that it?

Maybe other than he’s also an angel like Emilia, swings around a giant death scythe, and set up a fast food restaurant to watch over his enemy? Oh this guy. Maybe I should find out what his name is… Nah. I’ll just continue to facepalm of his character design.

Hataraku Maou-Sama 11 7

Also in this episode,

Hataraku Maou-Sama 11 1

Why do you we need 5 minutes straight of Chiho and Suzuno screaming at each other about Chiho’s love for Maou? Why does this argument continue exactly 2 minutes later in the middle of a battle? If you hated Chiho’s character before, get ready to an earful.

Hataraku Maou-Sama 11 5

This broom is bothering me! He takes a scene to open the closet and grab this broom and then hurries away on his bike to save Chiho? What purpose does this broom have?!? And why does it have green bristles?!

Things are heating up for the last 2 episodes for this season. Who knows what will happen. That broom is particularly suspicious. You should pick up this anime if you haven’t yet. It’s really funny in a very odd way.

#264 Vote for Me

Posted in Anime, Naruto Shippuden, Uncategorized with tags , , , , , , on June 4, 2013 by Lee T

Yo! I don’t usually post on Tuesdays, but I wanted to have a post just for this.

I submitted a design to the Naruto Shippuden Design Contest on a couple months ago and voting ends this Saturday so I’m running out of time!

Vote 5 so this awesome design can become an actual t-shirt you can buy from or even Hot Topic!

The only downside is that you have to make an account on the website to vote.

In other news,  the full and completed image of the Kyuubi Naruto made for my new banner has been uploaded to my deviantART gallery. Twice. It looks very different from the one used above, but hey, I am very proud of them. Check them out, leave a comment, tell me what you think.

And I will see you in the morning for Naruto chapter 633. You can follow me on Twitter where I will post a link to the chapter when it comes out. My chapter review will come about 12 hours afterwards.

Even though we thoroughly enjoyed the Korean dub of this movie, it is necessary to watch the movie in its intended quality and language. :)

Here are many links! Enjoy!

(links are rated from best quality to lowest quality. Hopefully the first link doesn’t break.)

Here is my review and rant blog post on the movie (even if it was only 3 blogs ago): Blog #252.

While we’re still on the topic of Naruto Shippuden, I entered a T-shirt competition on welovefine and I really hope I win. I would link you, but I can’t find my submission!

Here’s what it looks like.

This is the competition website. Rating starts May 8th. Help me find it and rate?

EDIT: Here’s the direct link to my submission. Now GO and make me proud.

#252 Menma Shippuden?

Posted in Anime, Naruto Shippuden with tags , , , , , , , , , on April 4, 2013 by Lee T

Naruto Shippuden movie 6 : Road to Ninja [watch here on YouTube]

So this is the Korean dub of this movie. Quite honestly, it’s not bad. Of course Naruto’s voice is annoying as hell (as it is in every language).
I apologize for the little Korean info bar floating in the video. Trust me, it bothers me as much as it bothers you, but there’s nothing I can do about it.

Too lazy to summarize, let’s get to the points I like!
Note: I write this while I’m watching it so I apologize if it gets confusing when I am foreshadowing.

Best. Freaking. Opening. Ever. Remake of Kyuubi battle from Yondaime’s perspective? Omygod. I can die happy now.

And of course, there’s the comical battle! I’ll talk about this later. I made my list of Naruto movie requirements 2 movies ago. Read that post here!

The scene after that is really bitter. Horribly bitter. There going through that whole “Naruto doesn’t have parents so let’s walk over the same parts of town” sequence. I’ve honestly seen this too many times in flashbacks, now Naruto in present time is walking through the same places his normal flashbacks usually take place, all ending at the park. Well, he goes to the park, then Sakura’s house, then back to the park. Oh, the park. Those two also blew up the park. Best. Date. Evah.

So “Madara” met the two and… Oh, screw it. I’m calling him Tobi.

Tobi put Sakura and Naruto in his genjutsu alternate world. Manga prologue said it would cater to Naruto’s wishes but it just looks like an f-ed up reality. I mean like, who the hell wanted Kiba to be a cat shaman?

N6 1Okay, I take it back. That is pretty darn cute.

And Naruto’s name is now Menma. This kinda flips my shit because there was another character (filler of course) called that and in that episode, Naruto actually went on a trip to get menma for the ramen man. (ps. the ramen man doesn’t have a name). I’m going to be super pissed if our protagonist is going to be called this the remainder of the movie.

I love this scene right here:
N6 2Notice how Sasuke almost shows interest.

N6 3Almost.

N6 4

Aaaaaaand it’s gone. Good ol’ Sasuke.

What twisted… teenager logic… Sakura’s parents are dead and the first thing she thinks of is freedom. Never saw Sakura as the rebellious type…

Naruto on the other hand, all the feelz go to him! This is a really sad movie for him! It actually makes sense that Naruto is really rejecting of all the feelz. He’s been a lone wolf his whole life he doesn’t know how to react to the familial bonds. He also is aware the world is fake and is set to make things the way they are. This theme is also carried out during the war. Naruto is our protagonist and it is his job to set things straight whether he likes it or not!

Sakura on the other hand is insensitive in every possible way. Usually the guy is in certain animes, but Sakura sure plays the part. A bit too well if you ask me.

And the safe?

N6 5

Again, they have this technology yet they can’t invent telephones?

Next scene!

N6 6

Everybody loves the badboy. Even the badboy himself! Who knew?

Back to the feelz.

The whole flashback of the day Naruto was born? Horribly placed. Who is having the flashback? It definitely isn’t Naruto! Pretty sure he was told the story, he did not witness any of this.

Oh, and there’s this.

N6 7

Totally didn’t copy that image from the manga.

naruto 503 1

Pretty pretty feelz. :3

So the ‘Naruto’ aka Menma of this world is all evil and stuff, wouldn’t Kushina and Minato know anything about this…? Maybe it’s like when Lisanna went to Edolas and the Elfman and MiraJane of that world pretended she was their sister…? What?

The whole Naruto riding on top of Kyuubi? Horrible. Same way Naruto gets a cool outfit when he went Sage Mode in Blood Prison. Absolutely horrible. Extremely flashy and convenient, but totally fake and made up.
What could have happened was that since Menma has the ability to split up the tails and use them as monsters, he could have the ability to summon the Kyuubi outside of his body. Naruto on the other hand would have to transform completely with the Kyuubi taking over his body. This information has already been established. You can’t change it! The newly introduced character could have all the snazzy new techniques because he is new. But noooo. They had to have plot convenience so the two can have a punch fight.

From a former animation student’s point of view, the Kyuubi’s run cycle is beautiful.

And then,

N6 8

What? How do those things even relate to each other? Well kinda but… what? He’ll still be able to move. Not in the right direction, but he’ll be able to move.

So Menma was possessed by an evil spirit? Did he die in the last scene? Why didn’t his parents notice he was gone nor recognize his techniques? Why did Tobi pull out chains to fight when he lost the physical body to fight? Where is the other world’s Sakura? So many plot holes!

And the man Menma kills in the beginning? Do you think he killed Tobi in that world?? That man was wearing all the Akatsuki rings. That’s probably why Tobi didn’t go to himself like we all expected.

Judging time!

It made me cry. Heck, it made Naruto cry too. First Naruto movie to make me really appreciate my life.

I heard that Kishimoto Misashi designed the characters and wrote parts of this movie so I guess I couldn’t expect any less, well except the Kyuubi part. That hopefully wasn’t him. There’s also a downside to the author’s hand in the movie. You can see it especially in the recent manga. He knows his story is coming to an end and he is cramming things in there that don’t really belong. What I’m saying is it looks like Kishimoto was never able to put parts in the story that he wanted to include so now he’s shoving them in as odd flashbacks and new information. I mean like, why would Sasuke and Itachi go on a hunting trip? Just saying it makes a lot more holes in the story. He wants to add more abstract detail, but there isn’t enough time to go full circle to let the view understand. For example in this movie, Menma was possessed in this movie that made his hair black. We don’t know why or when or how or even if it was necessary to show it dissipating away. Also the training ground that Jiraiya and Minato used.

On a more positive note, adding Sakura in was a genius move. There was somebody for Naruto to endure this challenge with rather than alone, even though he was alone in some parts. Sakura provided an extremely strong contrast as well when they switched lifestyles. Plus Sakura is rigidly selfish while Naruto is a tad bit more aware of other people’s emotions.

Naruto Shippuden Movie 6: Road to Ninja gets a whopping 5/5 for da feelz. Can’t go against da feelz.

N6 10All da feelz and more

It’s that time again! Time to find the things that make a Naruto movie a Naruto movie!

  1. Humorous intro battle
N6 11Might or might not be highly suggestive
  2. A damsel in distress
    N6 12Well, this is a first.
  3. A strange mysterious power
N6 13It’s like a little planet in your hand.
    N6 17He’s glowing purple!!!
    It’s evil! Run! Run!!
  4. Naruto goes Kyuubi
    N6 14
  5. Special Rasengan ending
N6 15It’s not that special. It was a reference to how Minato defeated Tobi, though.
  6. Strange technology
This one I added today. Every movie seems to have enemies with the craziest technology. I believe there were flying ninjas. You heard me, flying ninjas in Shippuden movie 2.

    N6 16Am I still in the same movie…?
  7. Evil henchmen
Another I added, but this goes for any action movie in existence. All bad guys have henchmen to carry out their dirty work or they wouldn’t be the bad guy!

    N6 18Is that a… seahorse?

That concludes my review of this movie. Kind of went screenshot crazy because I love making screenshots! Look! A baby fox!

N6 19

Sort of resembles what Naruto used to look like in the pilot chapter.

Naruto 0

Well resembles is a stretch, but it did remind me of it because they’re both so small and cute!
